First off, it was really neat that Vice President of Athletics Steve Patterson drove the team bus today. It was real strange though because he was reading the paper while doing it.
Ok, this didn’t happen. We had a bus where the driver sits below us, and it just looks odd. Anyways, here was our day…
Today was a long travel day, but the Sun Devils are settled into their hotel in Zhaoqing, which is actually called the Phoenix Hotel.
We won’t bore you with the details of where this city is (Google it), but just know this…we are way south now. And we will be even more south on Saturday when we go to Nanning. How south? Nanning is just 200 miles from Hanoi, as in Vietnam.
Today we left our Shanghai hotel at 9:45 and to the airport at 10:30 and then boarded a 12:30 p.m. flight to Guangzhou Airport. We had to catch a shuttle to the airplane and then it was basically a cattle call once we got off the shuttle bus to get to the steps of the flight. Oh, and it was hot today. Look below and you can see it was a crowded day.
After that flight that lasted close to three hours, we got our luggage (another hour, remember, we are talking 30+ people here), we boarded our bus, got our McDonald’s and was on the road for a two-hour trip to Zhaoqing. Arrival in Zhaoqing was about 6 p.m., and the fine folks of Hupu (sports marketing firm handling this part of trip) had a nice dinner for us with the opposing team also present.
This area got heavy rains last week. On the highway here we saw a lot of ducks and water, water and ducks. Rivers and lakes. Some swamps, and again much, much water. And in those swamps and lakes and fields were people working hard. Speaking of working hard, the guy at the hotel gift shop saw the players in the hallway and right away knew who we were and grabbed his mini poster. On it are Jahii, Jordan…and James Harden. Hope he doesn’t think James is coming. Oh well, it was neat.
Oh and best way to describe how different this place is from Beijing and Shanghai is to show you this view from one side of the hotel.
Some guys played pool after dinner, while others got worked over in ping pong by some non-ASU guys. Richie Edwards and Coach Greer didn’t represent very well.
Looking forward to playing a game tomorrow night! After our game in Zhaoqing, we will board a bus and drive two hours back to the airport and stay at an airport there since we have an early wake up call and flight Saturday.
By the way, today marked the 29th time the team got on and off the bus so far on this trip. It was also our fourth flight.
We shall check in with you tomorrow. A little tour of the area tomorrow morning, and then time to get ready for a game.
